By the declining day. (Al-‘Asr 103:1)

Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient. (Al-Baqarah 2:238)

And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember. (Hud 11:114)

And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech – in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless. (Al-A’raf 7:205)

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. (Al-Kahf 18:28)

So be patient, [O Muhammad], over what they say and exalt [ Allah ] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting. (Qaf 50:39)

So be patient, [O Muhammad (ﷺ)]. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning. (Ghafir 40:55)

And exalt Him morning and afternoon. (Al-Ahzab 33:42)

So exalted is Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning. (Ar-Rum 30:17)

And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning. (Aal Imran 3:41)

In houses (mosques), which Allah has ordered to be raised (to be cleaned, and to be honoured), in them His Name is glorified in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings. (An-Nur 24:36)

And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance. (Al-An’am 6:52)

And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening. (Ad-Dahr 76:25)

And to Allah prostrates whoever is within the heavens and the earth, willingly or by compulsion, and their shadows [as well] in the mornings and the afternoons. (Ar-R’ad 13:15)

So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon. (Maryam 19:11)

With him We had subjected the mountains that they join him in celebrating Allah’s glory, evening and morning (Sad 38:18)

That you [people] may believe in Allah and His Messenger and honor him and respect the Prophet and exalt Allah morning and afternoon. (Al-Fath 48:9)

So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied. (Taha 20:130)

“They distracted us from the middle prayer, ‘Asr prayer. May Allah fill their graves and houses or stomachs with fire.”

(Musnad Ahmad 1036)

2.8 Narrated Jabir (رضي الله عنه):

`Umar (رضي الله عنه) came cursing the disbelievers on the day of Al-Khandaq (the battle of Trench) and said, “I could not offer the `Asr prayer till the sun had set. Then we went to Buthan and he offered the (`Asr) prayer after sunset and then he offered the Maghrib prayer.

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 489)

2.10 Ali (رضي الله عنه) narrated:

“Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) would pray four Rak’ah before Al-Asr separating between them with At-Taslim upon the angels that are close (to Allah) and those who follow them among the Muslims and the believers.”

2.12 Al-‘Ala’ narrated to us that he entered upon Anas bin Malik (رضی الله عنهم) in his house in Al-Basrah, when he had finished Zuhr, and his house was beside the Masjid. “When we entered upon him, he said: ‘Have you prayed ‘Asr?’ We said: ‘No, we have just finished Zuhr.’ He said: ‘Pray ‘Asr.’ So we got up and prayed, and when we finished he said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah

“That is the prayer of the hypocrite: he sits and delays ‘Asr prayer until (the sun) is between the horns of the Shaitan, then he gets up and pecks four (Rak’ahs) in which he only remembers Allah a little.'”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i Vol. 1, Book 6, Hadith 512)

2.13 Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) reported that Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) took hold of my hands and said:

Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, created the clay on Saturday and He created the mountains on Sunday and He created the trees on Monday and He created the things entailing labour on Tuesday and created light on Wednesday and He caused the animals to spread on Thursday and created Adam (عليه الصلاة والسلام) after ‘Asr on Friday; the last creation at the last hour of the hours of Friday, i. e. between afternoon and night. This hadith is narrated through another chain of transmitters.

(Sahih Muslim 2789)

2.14 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

(Riyad as-Salihin 1053)

2.15 It was narrated from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) that: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Friday is twelve hours in which there is no Muslim slave who asks Allah (سبحانه و تعالى) for something but He will give it to him, so seek it in the last hour after ‘Asr.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i Book 14, Hadith 26)

“Allah will prepare for him who goes to the mosque (every) morning and in the afternoon (for the congregational prayer) an honorable place in Paradise with good hospitality for (what he has done) every morning and afternoon goings.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 662)

2.17 Ata’ b. Yasar reported, on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضی الله عنهم), the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) as saying:

He who went towards the mosque in the morning or evening, Allah would arrange a feast for him morning or evening in Paradise.

(Sahih Muslim 669)

2.18 Anas (رضی الله عنه) said that he heard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) say:

“That I sit with people remembering Almighty Allah from the morning (Fajr) prayer until sunrise is more beloved to me than freeing four slaves from among the Children of Isma’il. And that I sit with people remembering Allah from the afternoon (‘Asr) prayer until the sun sets is more beloved to me than freeing four slaves from among the Children of Isma’il.”

(Hisn al-Muslim 75a)

2.19 Narrated Ibn `Umar (رضی الله عنه): Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“Your period (i.e. the Muslims’ period) in comparison to the periods of the previous nations, is like the period between the `Asr prayer and sunset. And your example in comparison to the Jews and the Christians is like the example of a person who employed some laborers and asked them, ‘Who will work for me till midday for one Qirat each?’ The Jews worked for half a day for one Qirat each. The person asked, ‘Who will do the work for me from midday to the time of the `Asr (prayer) for one Qirat each?’ The Christians worked from midday till the `Asr prayer for one Qirat. Then the person asked, ‘Who will do the work for me from the `Asr till sunset for two Qirats each?’ ” The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) added, “It is you (i.e. Muslims) who are doing the work from the `Asr till sunset, so you will have a double reward. The Jews and the Christians got angry and said, ‘We have done more work but got less wages.’ Allah said, ‘Have I been unjust to you as regards your rights?’ They said, ‘No.’ So Allah said, ‘Then it is My Blessing which I bestow on whomever I like. “

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3459)

2.20 Narrated Abu Hurairah (رضی الله عنه): Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“There are three to whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, not will He look at them, nor will He purify them, and they will have a painful punishment. (1) A man at a place with excess water in the desert and who withholds it from the travelers. (2) A man who sold a commodity to another person in the afternoon (or after the ‘Asr prayer) and swore to him by Allah that he had bought it at such and such price and he (the buyer) believed him yet that was not the case. (3) And a man who pledged allegiance to an Imam only for the sake of the world (material gains). Hence, if the Imam bestowed on him something out of that (i.e. worldly riches) he stood by his pledge of allegiance, and if he did not give him, he did not fulfill the pledge of allegiance.”

(Bulugh al-Maram 1429)

2.21 Narrated An-Nu’man bin Muqarrin

“I fought along with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), and if Fajr had begun he would wait until the sun rose, and when it rose he would fight. And if it was the middle of the daytime, he would wait until the sun passed the zenith, and when it passed the zenith he would fight until ‘Asr. Then he would wait until he prayed ‘Asr, then he would fight.” He said: “And it is used to be said during that (time) the the wind of victory was raging, and the believers would supplicate for their armies in their Salat.”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1612)

2.22 It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) said:

“The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to stand in Zuhr and recite the equivalent of thirty verses in each Rak’ah, then in the first two Rak’ahs of ‘Asr he would stand for the equivalent of fifteen verses.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 476)

2.23 Jabir bin Samurah (رضي الله عنه) narrated:

“For Zuhr and Asr, Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) would recite: ‘By the heavens, holding the Buruj (Surah Al-Buruj 85)’ and ‘By the heavens and At-Tariq (Surah At-Tariq 86)’ and similar to them.”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 307)

2.24 ‘Umara bin Ruwaiba is reported to have said on the authority of his father (رضی الله عنهم): I heard the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) saying:

He who observes prayer before the rising of the sun and its setting, i.e. the dawn prayer and the afternoon prayer, would not enter the (Hell) fire.

(Sahih Muslim 634 a)

2.25 It was narrated that Jabir bin Samurah (رضي الله عنه) said:

“The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to recite ‘By the night as it envelops (Surah Al-Layl 92)’ in Zuhr and something similar in ‘Asr, and he would recite something longer than that in subh.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i 980)

2.26 Abu Basra Ghifari (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) led us in the ‘Asr prayer at (the place known as) Mukhammas, and then said:

“This prayer was presented to those gone before you, but they lost it, and he who guards it has two rewards in store for him. And no prayer is valid after till the onlooker appears (by onlooker is meant the evening star).”

(Sahih Muslim 830 a)

2.27 It was narrated that Abu Basrah Al-Ghifari (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) led us in praying ‘Asr in Al-Mukhammas. He said:

“This prayer was enjoined upon those who came before you, but they neglected it. Whoever prays it regularly will have a two-fold reward, and there is no prayer after it until the Shahid appears (And the Shahid is ‘the star’).”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i Vol. 1, Book 6, Hadith 522)

2.28 Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (رضي الله عنه) reported: Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“He who observes the Fajr and ‘Asr (prayers) will enter Jannah.”

(Riyad as-Salihin Book 1, Hadith 132)

2.29 Jarir b. Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) is reported to have said:

We were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) that he looked at the full moon and observed: You shall see your Lord as you are seeing this moon, and you will not be harmed by seeing Him. So if you can, do not let yourselves be overpowered in case of prayer observed before the rising of the sun and its setting, i.e. the ‘Asr prayer and the morning prayer.

Jarir (رضي الله عنه) then recited:

“Celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting” (Taha 20:130).

(Sahih Muslim 633 a)

2.30 Narrated Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه): Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“Angels come to you in succession by night and day and all of them get together at the time of the Fajr and `Asr prayers. Those who have passed the night with you (or stayed with you) ascend (to the Heaven) and Allah asks them, though He knows everything about you, well, “In what state did you leave my slaves?” The angels reply: “When we left them they were praying and when we reached them, they were praying.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 555)

2.31 Narrated Fudalah (رضي الله عنه):

The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) taught me and what he taught me is this: Observe the five prayers regularly. He said: I told (him): I have many works at these times; so give me a comprehensive advice which, if I follow, should be enough for me. He said: Observe the two afternoon prayers (Al-Asrayn). But the term Al-Asrayn (two afternoon prayers) was not used in our language. Hence I said: What is Al-Asrayn? He said: A prayer before the sunrise and a prayer before the sunset (i.e. the dawn and the afternoon prayers).

(Sunan Abi Dawud 428)

2.32 It was narrated from Abu Salam (رضي الله عنه), that : the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “There is no Muslim – or no person, or slave (of Allah) – who says, in the morning and evening:

‘I am content with Allah as my Lord, Islam as my religion and Muhammad as my Prophet’,

but he will have a promise from Allah to make him pleased on the Day of Resurrection.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 3870)

2.33 It was narrated from `Abdullah bin `Abbas (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Whoever raises three orphans, is like the one who spends his nights in prayer and fasts during the day, and goes out morning and evening drawing his sword in the cause of Allah. In Paradise, he and I will be brothers like these two sisters. And he held up his forefinger and middle finger together.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah 3680)

2.34 Narrated Abu Hurairah and Ibn ‘Abbas (رضی الله عنهم): That the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Going out in the morning in the cause of Allah, or in the afternoon, is better than the world and what is in it.”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1649)

2.35 Narrated Abu Bakr bin Abi Musa: My father (رضی الله عنهم) said, “Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

‘Whoever prays the two cool prayers (`Asr and Fajr) will go to Paradise.’ “

(Sahih al-Bukhari 574)

2.36 Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said:

“Whoever says in the morning and in the evening ‘Glory is to Allah and with His Praise’ a hundred times, none shall bring better than him on the Day of Judgment except one who did the same as him, or increased upon it.”

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3469)

2.37 It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: Whoever remains seated in his place after the ‘Asr salah on a Friday and recites the following:

“O Allah send salat upon Muhammad, the un-lettered Prophet and his family; and send salams (upon them)”

will have 80 years of sins forgiven, and 80 years of worship recorded for him.

(Al-Sakhawi in Al-Qawlul Badi’, p400)

2.38 Umm Salma (رضي الله عنها) narrated that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said,

“Whoever prays four ra’kahs before Asr, Allah will forbid hellfire for his body”
